Premier meets US Ambassador to Moldova

Chisinau, 10 September /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet today discussed with US Ambassador to Moldova James D. Pettit about the socio-political situation in the country, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.
The two officials exchanged views about the recent events occurring in Moldova, including the protests which have been taking place in the capital since 6 September.
The prime minister said he was sorry that people were driven to protest and reiterated his firm opinion that the government’s resignation would further aggravate the situation. In this context, Valeriu Strelet spoke in details about the actions taken by the government within the first 42 days in office, as well as the measures already planned, which would provide fast solutions. "The government has a firm and sincere vision to change things, a priority in this respect being ensuring financial and economic stability, justice reform, energy infrastructure development, resolving the spectrum of social issues, public administration reform and strengthening society," the prime minister said.
For his part, Ambassador James D. Pettit said that ensuring stability and continuing modernisation reforms were of key importance. The US official reiterated his country's support for Moldova.
The sides also referred to the issues regarding the Transnistrian conflict settlement, the process of preparing for the visit of the International Monetary Fund to Moldova and others.
Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet expressed condolences to the American people about the events on 11 September 2001. "The attacks that took place 14 years ago marked the beginning of a new process in modern history, of understanding the true essence of international terrorism regardless of the origin of this phenomenon and combating it with great determination", the premier said.
Ambassador James D. Pettit thanked the prime minister for commemorating the victims of the terrorist attacks 14 years ago and laying flowers at the US Embassy in Chisinau this morning.
