Chisinau, 24 September /MOLDPRES/- Moldova will benefit from an assistance project from the EU on amending the legislation related to the Constitutional Court (CC). CC head Alexandru Tanase made a statement on the matter at an international conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary.
Tanase said that the the system's reformation was "to allow the citizens' access to the CC and less the politicians". "When the citizen has access to the court and volume of submitted notifications is higher than the one from the political field, we can say that a court follows an agenda of depoliticising. As long as all notifications are from politics, the CC is an actor in the political field", he said.
Tanase underlined the CC's significant role in settling the most complicated political situations in the country. "CC allowed to set the most important standards as regards the human rights protection", the official noted.
Attending the event was also Justice Minister Vladimir Cebotari. He pointed out that CC had been and remained the institution that must ensure constitutionality and law supremacy. "If someone criticizes the court's activity, I would say that this is normal and not a bad one, as it proves that CC does its job and is not at the whim of political parties", he also said.
The Constitutional Court was set up on 23 February 1995, as the first and the only authority of constitutional jurisdiction in Moldova's history.
Attending the event were representatives of the Venice Commission, Council of Europe and EU.
