Moldovan PM approaches sustainable development, international security

Chisinau, 1 October /MOLDPRES/- Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet delivered a speech on behalf of Moldova within a high-level meeting of the 70th session of UN General Assembly on 30 September. Leaders of member states discussed United Nations' role in maintaining peace and international security, promoting sustainable development and human rights observance, as well as adopting post-2015 development agenda, the government's communication and media relations department has reported.

International security topic was found in the speech delivered by the premier, who especially referred to deteriorating security system and cooperation in Europe, once the annexation of Crimea by Russia and breaking out armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. "Moldova backs peaceful settlement of conflict in Donbass in line with the agreement concluded in Minsk, observing sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We are in solidarity with the Ukrainian people in these difficult times", he said.

Referring to the Transnistrian conflict settlement, the premier opted for its solving by identifying a special status, observing integrity and sovereignty of Moldova. Also, he reiterated the position on the need to withdraw military forces and Russian ammunitions from Moldova, in line with international commitments and constitutional provisions.

Strelet noted that Moldova backed all actions taken by United Nations in preventing conflicts, combating international terrorism, opting for all the countries actively participate in implementing the priorities. In this context, the premier pointed out that Moldova had submitted instruments for ratification of Arms Trade Treaty. Strelet also recalled the country's contribution to UN peacekeeping missions by deploying servicemen ti Kosovo, Sudan and Central African Republic.

The premier also tackled the importance of observing human rights, given that the principle was violated in many parts of the world. Moldova actively cooperates within the international periodical evaluation process, implementing the national action plan on human rights.

Referring to the post-2015 sustainable development agenda, Strelet said that Moldova backed the initiatives of United Nations and member states in the climate changes. Moldova plans to increase renewable energy rate by 20 per cent till 2020. "Moreover, the implementation of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement represents a strategic direction meant to complement efforts of our country in promoting sustainable development goals", he said. Strelet appreciated the positive effects of implementation of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement on the country's development, stressing that the document brings Moldova closer to EU in terms of politics and economics, and contributes to modernising Moldovan society in the spirit of European values - democracy, law supremacy and human rights observation.

"Moldova backs the efforts of reform of United Nations, General Assembly and Security Council, meant to increase efficiency, transparency and equitable regional representation. We express conviction that all member states will be further set to confront new dangers and challenges, promoting peace and cooperation, as UN founders urged us", he concluded.
