Moldova's representative elected member of UN Committee

Chisinau, 8 October /MOLDPRES/ - The 15th meeting of the member states of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was summoned in Geneva today, in order to carry out elections to fill vacancies of the members of the homonymous Committee Against Torture (CAT), the Foreign and European Integration Ministry's information and media communication service has reported.
Participating in the contest were 15 candidacies for five vacancies on behalf of the following states: France, Latvia, Egypt (withdrawn at 7 October 2015) Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, Ukraine, Mexico, Mauritius, Argentina, USA, Mozambique, Pakistan, Tunisia.
Moldova's candidature, Ana Racu, was selected in the first round with 83 votes, along with the candidates of the USA (85 votes) and Mexico (99 votes).
Ana Racu has earlier been a member of the Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture on behalf of Moldova.
