Moldovan premier meets European Council president in Brussels

Chisinau, 12 October /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet met European Council President Donald Tusk during his fist visit to Brussels on 12 October. The officials assessed the political dialogue between Moldova and European Union, the government's communication and media relations department has reported. 

The prime minister said Moldova's strategic goal stayed the European integration and the government he led had undertaken concrete steps to achieve this aim. The two officials exchanged opinions on the way the Association Agreement was implemented, with Valeriu Strelet highlighting a string of actions to adjust the Moldovan legislation to the EU standards. The prime minister reiterated the present government's firm conviction to press ahead with the reforms in vital sectors for Moldova, such as: judicial system's reform, fighting corruption, improving the financial and banking system, investigation of the financial frauds and sanctioning the guilty persons.

The sides also discussed the political, social and economic situation in Moldova, as well as prospects for singing an agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

Another subject tackled at the meeting between Valeriu Strelet and Donald Tusk was focused on regional security and developments in the Transnistrian conflict settlement.

At the end of the meeting, Donald Tusk gave assurances that the European Union would back Moldova in implementing reforms and the Association Agreement.
