Moldovan, UN officials approach future priorities, support

Chisinau, 16 October /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister Natalia Gherman and UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova Dafina Gercheva held a joint news conference on summing up the cooperation between Moldova and United Nations, and future priorities, on the occasion of marking the 70th anniversary of foundation of the United Nations this month, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s communication and media relations department has reported.
The officials said that, during 23 years since Moldova’s accession to UN, the reforms in such sectors as: democratic government, human rights, gender equality, sustainable energy development, agriculture, environmental protection had been implemented in the country in cooperation and with support of the United Nations. Moldova backed UN efforts to ensure peace and stability, to promote disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons, fight against international terrorism, and participated over the time in peacekeeping operations in Liberia, South Sudan, Sudan, Kosovo and Central African Republic.
“A wide perspective of cooperation with the UN country team opens us a new post-2015 development agenda, recently adopted within the UN Summit in New York, which reflects a new development vision at global level, by reducing inequalities, ensuring well-being for everyone and economic development with preserving the natural capital. Now we have to set together indicators to carry out this agenda in our country by concrete actions”, Gherman said.
In the context, Natalia Gherman informed that a council for sustainable development would be created under the prime minister’s office, which would identify priorities on the post-2015 development agenda, named agenda 2030, and would ensure their implementation.
Also, the Moldovan official thanked the entire UN team in Chisinau for the constructive dialogue and constant support for Moldova, and voiced confidence in an efficient cooperation in future too, in order to achieve the strategic desideratum of European integration and country’s sustainable development.
For her part, Dafina Gercheva said “Moldova managed to significantly reduce the poverty rate and infant mortality. Now, time is ripe for the government to identify new goals. The government will not be alone on this way. UN and me personally are looking forward to join our efforts with government, civil society and private sector, in order to achieve sustainable development goals and to back Moldova on its path to become a modern and prosperous European country."
