Sweden to further back Moldova’s reform agenda

Chisinau, 20 October /MOLDPRES/-  Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet today held a meeting with newly-appointed Swedish Ambassador to Moldova Signe Burgstaller. The officials tackled Moldovan-Swedish bilateral ties, as well as cooperation within international organizations, both states are members of, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

Burgstaller reiterated Sweden’s interest in further developing bilateral relations, backing Moldova’s reform agenda and its EU integration course.

Strelet thanked the Swedish government for the generous support it offers Moldova. The prime minister spoke out for enhancing the Moldovan-Swedish dialogue, expressing his confidence that the bilateral partnership would continue its development during the mandate of the new Swedish ambassador to Moldova.

The sides also discussed Moldova’s social and political situation, its government’s current priorities and cooperation prospects. The officials focused on ensuring Moldova’s energy security, promotion of renewable energy projects and energy efficiency, as well as on opportunities to cooperate to boost the competitiveness of the Moldovan agricultural sector.

Sweden is one of Moldova’s main development partners, with projects in various social and economic fields. Moldova is currently implementing more projects financed by the Swedish government, amounting to 37 million euros. The Strategy for Sweden's International Development in 2014-2020 provides for the annual allocation of 14 million euros to promote reforms in Moldova, and namely, to its economic integration into the EU, ensure human rights and the supremacy of law, protect environment and consolidate its endurance to global climate chances.
