Moldova becomes member of UN Economic, Social Council

Chisinau, 22 October /MOLDPRES/- On 21 October, elections to fill 18 vacancies within the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for 2016-2018 were held in New York, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry's communication and media relations service has reported.
Moldova ran along with the Czech Republic for the two vacancies for the Eastern-European Group within the UN. It was elected by 179 votes.
As a member of ECOSOC, Moldova will have the opportunity to promote the national priorities in economic, social and environment sectors, including in the context of implementing the goals of the agenda 2030 on sustainable development.
This will be the second mandate of Moldova in ECOSOC, after the one in 2008-2010, which culminated in exercising the position of Vice-President of ECOSOC in 2010.
