Moldova hosts first United Nations Fair

Chisinau, 24 October /MOLDPRES/- On the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the United Nations Organisation (UN) organised for the first time ever a fair, in Chisinau today. Over 300 visitors learned directly from the first source about the activity of UN agencies and projects in Moldova.
The event was carried out by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Yardsale community of artisans and craftsmen.
The UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova, Dafina Gercheva, said the fair was a wonderful opportunity to communicate directly with the people the UN is taking efforts for, and discuss priority subjects like, green energy, recycling, volunteering opportunities and gender equality.
The National Library of Moldova, which hosted the event, turned into an exhibition centre for one day. Visitors were informed of the UN’s various activities in Moldova, ranging from justice, defence and promotion of human rights, to economic development, social inclusion, energy efficiency and climate change. Partner organisations, including NGOs active in the fields of economic growth, environment protection and inclusive development, participated with stands and activities.
Technological innovations based on solar, wind, biomass and geothermal energy, were as well exhibited at the fair. Visitors participated in paper and waste recycling workshops, as well as in contests testing knowledge of human rights and benefits of renewable energy.
Being founded in 1945, the UN has currently 193 member states. Moldova is celebrating the 23rd anniversary of its UN membership.
