Moldovan law enforcement bodies arrest Balti mayor

Chisinau, 24 October /MOLDPRES/-The mayor of Balti municipality, leader of the Partidul Nostru Party (Our Party) Renato Usatii, was detained and interrogated by law-enforcement bodies on grounds of violating the secrecy of correspondence.

Usatii was arrested by officers of the Information and Security Service (SIS ) on 23 October in the evening. The same evening officers searched Usatii’s house and party headquarters.

The lawyers of the mayor gave a news conference today, stating that Usatii had told prosecutors where he got the records from.

Renato Usatii had previously used his account on a social network to make public a string of phone interceptions of conversations between the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), Vlad Filat and the mayor of Orhei town, Ilan Shor. Usatii also published interceptions of phone conversations of President Nicolae Timofti and Interior Minister Oleg Balan.
