Chisinau, 15 January /MOLDPRES/-The leader of the European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM), Iurie Leanca said his party would go into opposition and would not back any candidate for the position of prime minister, as according to him, snap elections is the only way to steer Moldova out of political crisis.
After today’s meeting of PPEM’s Political Council, Leanca said Moldova’s current political crisis had been caused by the ruling parties in 2015. “Moldova’s political class has discredited itself. Snap elections could be the only method to restore the lawfulness of the political process. Based on that, we declare ourselves in opposition to any candidate for the position of prime minister, including against Ion Paduraru and Pavel Filip,” Leanca said.
“We hold on to our position. We do not sign and will not back the parliamentary majority’s candidate. We also decided to stay away from such political games, as they only continue to do nothing but damage the Moldovan society,” PPEM MP Eugen Carpov said.
The leader of the Socialist Party (PSRM), Igor Dodon today said his party would not back Ion Paduraru for the position of prime minister.
“The Socialists’ position continues to be firm. We will not vote in support of any candidate in the current parliament. We believe snap elections are the most appropriate solution for Moldova at this stage,” Dodon said.
The factions of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) and Party of Communists (PCRM) have not stated an opinion on the candidate designated for the position of prime minister so far.
President Nicolae Timofti on 14 January signed a decree on the designation of the presidency’s General Secretary Ion Paduraru as a candidate for the position of prime minister.
The parliamentary majority today requires that the president revokes his decree on the appointment of Paduraru as a candidate for the office of prime minister, nominating acting Information Technology and Communications Minister Pavel Filip as its own candidate for the position of prime minister.
