Moldovan Prosecutor General's Office to investigate violence at protests

Chisinau, 21 January /MOLDPRES/- A criminal investigation will be made on the case of violence that occurred at the parliament’s headquarters on 20 January. The Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) made statements to this effect today.

According to the PG’s press service, the criminal investigation group takes all measures seen by the law to investigate all circumstances of the case and identify the people involved in committing and triggering violent actions.

In the nearest future, the injury brought to people who have suffered and asked for health care is to be legally ascertained. Also, the prosecution will assess the material damages caused to the parliament by destroying its assets and to General Inspectorate of Police through stealing and damaging police equipment.

If people are found guilty of organizing and participating in mass disorder, the criminal law sees punishment of up to eight years of imprisonment.

According to data by emergency doctors, as a result of the 20 January protests, 15 persons, among whom policemen and civilians, asked for health care.

Liberal MP Mihai Ghimpu was aggressed during the protests too.
