Moldovan PM pays homage to servicemen dead in Afghanistan war

Chisinau, 14 February /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Pavel Filip, accompanied by Defence Minister Anatol Salaru and Interior Minister Alexandru Jizdan, today attended an event dedicated to commemorating the servicemen who died in the Afghanistan war. The action took place at the Chisinau-based memorial venue “Feciorilor Patriei - Sfîntă Amintire” (Holy Memory to Sons of Motherland), the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.
The people present at the event, among whom veterans, members of the families of the soldiers dead in Afghanistan, representatives of the state’s institutions and politicians, laid flowers at the monument Holy Memory to Sons of Motherland and stood silent for one minute in the memory of the servicemen dead in the Afghanistan war.
At a solemn meeting, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said that it was important not to forget this tragic event from Moldova’s history and keep the memory of the war’s victims.
''The Afghanistan war is a controversial chapter of history, yet I am fully confident that time will not diminish the heroism and courage displayed by these soldiers. The government I lead will to its utmost for their deed not to be forgotten and will take care that the soldiers be commemorated Christianly and those who survived have a decent life,’’ Pavel Filip said.
The Afghanistan war lasted ten years, starting from 1979 till 1989. Almost 13,000 Moldovans participated in this war and over 300 were killed.
The events dedicated to the day of commemorating the servicemen dead in the Afghanistan war were organized with the government’s support.
