German OSCE chairmanship encourages Moldovan authorities to continue dialogue in Transnistrian settlement

Chisinau, 15 February /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu and OSCE Special Representative Cord Meier-Klodt discussed priorities of the German OSCE chairmanship‘s priorities and the schedule of actions provided for in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process in 2016 at a meeting today, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
The speaker praised OSCE’s role of mediator in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process and voiced the Moldovan authorities’ determination to back efforts by the German OSCE chairmanship to boost the conflict’s resolution.
“We hope that the scheduled initiatives will also yield results for recovering the trust and resuming the negotiations on different dimensions. We hope to have an advanced progress in the Transnistria-related problems next spring. The chairmanship of Germany may be marked by very good results,” Andrian Candu said.
According to the parliament speaker, it is necessary to resume the inter-parliamentary dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol with OSCE’s support. At the same time, Andrian Candu specified that, in the relations with the Transnistrian region, a string of confidence building measures are needed, for the beginning, that would regard the settlement of topics dealing with the work of enterprises from the region, railway transport, telecommunications, education diplomas, academic mobility and international scholarships, extension of the Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication (SMURD), etc. The parliament speaker believes that these subjects should be included in the agenda of the next discussions in the five-plus-two and one-plus-one formats.
”The global and regional context has a nature able to help us become a success story in the Transnistrian conflict settlement,” Andrian Candu said.
For his part, Cord Meier-Klodt said the German OSCE chairmanship encouraged the Moldovan authorities to continue the dialogue in the Transnistrian settlement process. At the same time, the special representative of the OSCE chairmanship said the German presidency of the organisation would provide Moldova with full needed support to enliven the settlement process for the benefit of the citizens from both banks of Dniester. .
“The German OSCE chairmanship does not believe that it is able to solve in several months a conflict that has lasted for more than 20 years; yet, we may record progress, that will transform Moldova into a success story. This is also one of the priorities of the German OSCE chairmanship and the Foreign Ministry of Germany. We want to do this for the good the citizens, for their prosperity and a better life,” Cord Meier-Klodt added. The official is on his first visit to Moldova in his capacity of special representative for Transnistrian conflict's settlement of Germany’s acting chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 2016.
