Chisinau, 25 February /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament today adopted the draft law on Prosecution in the final reading. Sixty five MPs voted for.

The law sets a new mechanism of appointing the Prosecutor General. The latter will be appointed by the Moldovan president for a single seven-year mandate, at a proposal by the Superior Council of Prosecutors. The candidate for this office will be selected by public contest.

The prosecution system will be made up of the Prosecutor General’s Office, specialized prosecutor offices and territorial ones. Only the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office out of all specialized prosecutor offices will continue working and a new one will be created – for special causes.

Under the document, the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) will be a self-administration body of the prosecution. The Council will have a separate budget from the prosecution, which will guarantee its independence. Also, CSP will have three colleges: of evaluation; discipline and ethics; selection and career.

Among the basic goals due to be achieved by enforcing the new legislative and institutional regulations on Prosecution, there are  enhancing the prosecutors’ independence and responsibility, ensuring the principle of lawfulness and observance of human rights at all the stages of the criminal prosecution.
