Chisinau, 16 March /MOLDPRES/ - The Constitutional Court (CCM) today ruled that the Moldovan president was to exercise the mandate till a new head of state is sworn in office.
The decision was taken, given that the mandate of the current president expires today, as Nicolae Timofti was elected head of state on 16 March 2012, and was sworn in office on 23 March.
“The court decided that, if there is vacancy of the office of president in connection with the mandate’s expiration, he/she will exercise the duties till a newly-elected head of state is sworn in office, as the duties of ad interim come about only following the resignation or dismissal from office of the country’s president, temporary or final impossibility to exercise the duties or death,” the CCM ruling also says.
The Constitutional Court’s decision is final, cannot be subjected to any appeal, enters into force on the date of adoption and is published in the Official Journal of Moldova.
On 4 March 2016, CCM ruled that the Moldovan president was to be elected and dismissed by direct voting, with the date of the future polls due to be established.
