Moldovan PM demands concrete measures to prevent traffic accidents triggered by alcohol consumption

Chisinau, 18 March /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Pavel Filip, at a cabinet meeting, has demanded that institutions in charge take concrete measures to prevent traffic accidents triggered by consumption of alcohol. “There is no week without us learning about serious accidents, with injured and dead persons, many of which taking place against the background of consumption of alcohol,” the prime minister said, according to the government’s communication and media relations department.
At a request by the prime minister, Interior Minister Alexandru Jizdan informed that, to reduce the number of these accidents, an action plan had been developed, which provides for a string of concrete measures. The minister also said that the legislative and normative legislation in the sector was needed to be amended too.
In this context, Justice Minister Vladimir Cebotari proposed to increase the fines for drivers caught drunk from 3,000 to 15,000 lei, with depriving them to drive the transport means for a certain period.
The prime minister backed the proposals, specifying that “any loopholes in the law, which would allow the people committing grave accidents under the influence of alcohol and drugs, must be closed.”
“Even if I seem to be quite insistent, I assure you that we would return to this subject, until we manage to make decisive steps in diminishing the number of serious accidents on roads of Moldova.” the prime minister added.
