Chisinau, 18 March /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu today instructed to initiate the procedure of nomination of a new composition of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC).
On 11 February 2016, the five-year mandate of the CEC members expired; yet, they will continue working till the parliament appoints a new CEC composition.
Under the Electoral Code, the Central Electoral Commission is made up of nine members. One member is appointed by the Moldovan president and another eight are to be nominated by the parliament, with proportional representation between the majority and the opposition.
The speaker noted that, given that “the present parliamentary majority is made up of 57 MPs, and the opposition – by 44 lawmakers, therefore, the eight CEC members are to be appointed by the parliament as follows: the parliamentary majority will put forward five members and the opposition – three members.”
Andrian Candu demanded that that the CEC head is put up by representatives of the opposition.
“I ask the juridical commission for rules and immunities to start the legal procedure of appointment of the CEC members, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Code,” Candu added.
