Chisinau, 19 March /MOLDPRES/- Moldova marks Earth Hour today. It is a global environmental action, when citizens are urged to turn the lights off for one hour. It is aimed at paying attention to effects of global warming, climate change, pollution and nature protection.
The Environment Ministry prepared on this occasion a cultural agenda scheduled for today at 16:30-22:00 on Eugen Doga Street.
At 20:30, the light will be turned off for one hour in the capital, along with thousands of cities.
First Earth Hour was organized by World Wide Fund for Nature in Australia in 2007, and the campaign was successful, bringing together over 2 million people. In 2015, the lights were turned off in over 7,000 cities from 160 countries.
The event is organized in Moldova the eighth year in a row. If today during one hour all Moldovan household consumers turn the lights off, about 278,000 KW per hour would be saved. About 86,800 cubic meters of gas are consumed to produce the quantity of energy, and 165 tons of greenhouse gas is issued into the air after burning.
