Chisinau, 25 March /MOLDPRES/-The new prosecution law was published in Moldova’s Official Journal today.
The document will enter into force on 1 August 2016, after related legislation on the activity of the Prosecutor General’s Office is amended and department normative documents are aligned with the new provisions of the law.
According to the new law, the implementation of new legislative and institutional regulations will enhance prosecutors’ independence and responsibility and will ensure the principle of legality, observing human rights at all stages of prosecution.
The law also provides for a new mechanism for appointing the prosecutor general, who is going to be appointed by the president for a single seven-year mandate, at the proposal of the Superior Council of Prosecutors. The candidate for this office will be selected through public contest.
The prosecution draft law was debated, approved and subjected to expertise by national and international institutions in charge. Thus, Venice Commission approved this draft law two months ago.
The prosecution reform is one of the government action programme’s priorities and is also part of the reform strategy of the justice sector. The activities in this field are carried out and promoted by state authorities, with the active support of national and international partners.
The Moldovan parliament voted the new prosecution draft law in final reading on 25 February 2016. President Nicolae Timofti promulgated the law on 16 March 2016.
