Moldovan parliamentary parties disapprove of yesterday’s protests

Chisinau, 25 April /MOLDPRES/-Parliamentary parties disapprove of the protests organized by the “Dreptate si Adevar” Civic Platform (Dignity and Truth-DA Platform) on 24 April, calling them a “pre-election campaign in this year’s presidential elections”.

According to Democrat MP Sergiu Sirbu, it is regrettable that the peaceful protest had degenerated into unpleasant incidents, as more violations have been attested. “I believe those who violated the law should be held liable. I understand that this is someone’s election campaign, however, the state is the one suffering,” Sirbu said.

The leader of the Social Democrat Platform for Moldova, Violeta Ivanonv said yesterday’s protest was “a total failure”, as its organizers did not have the support of the citizens. “Things said at the protest are an electoral message and represent their intention to use citizens’ discontent to gain political benefits. This is an obstacle to the measures the Moldovan government is already implementing, and by that I mean the first positive changes resulted from the activity of the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Pavel Filip,” Ivanov noted.

MPs believe the demands protesters have put forward run counter to the Constitution.

“Legally, it is impossible to fulfill the claims. Usurpation of the state power and violation of law is what they want us to do. There is a law for that and we cannot hold snap elections whenever we want it. We are going to decide on our next actions and whether we will agree on a dialogue or not,” Sirbu.  

“I believe we should talk both to protesters and the rest of the citizens. We are very well aware that people want stability in the country and positive results from their government, instead of snap elections and chaos. The members of DA Platform want to disorganize the society and are not interested in having a dialogue,” Ivanov said.

Regarding the statements of the leader of DA Platform, Andrei Nastase, according to whom “Moldova has been captured by the oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc”, both MPs did not want to comment on them, calling them “electoral and political statements”.

Liberal MPs did not answer the phone to comment on this subject.

A large-scale protest against the government and the decision of the Central Electoral Commission to reject an initiative on the organisation of a constitutional referendum, was held in Chisinau on 24 April. Protesters adopted a resolution, demanding the government to set up a date for snap elections in emergency mode, at the same time with the presidential elections and the constitutional referendum.
