Chisinau, 18 May /MOLDPRES/ - European MPs have reconfirmed the need to continue the reforms and maintain the European course of Moldova.

MEP Andi Cristea today made statement to this effect following the meeting of the EU – Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, held in Chisinau on 18-19 May.

According to the official, the participants in the joint meeting discussed subjects on the present state of the EU-Moldova cooperation, progress made in implementing the reforms’ agenda and the financial situation.

“We have identified progress; nevertheless, reforms are necessary, concrete actions in fighting corruption, depoliticizing the institutions and overcoming the vulnerability of the banking system. All these must be carried out not only formally, but also qualitatively, in order to reconfirm both the trust of the European partners and the Moldovan citizens,” MEP Andi Cristea said.

The co-chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on behalf of Moldova, Mihai Ghimpu, said the government was determined to regain the confidence of the European partners, and for this, “it is necessary to sign an agreement with the International Monetary Fund, as well as to continuously implement the reforms. We know about the existence of more arrears; yet, today we unveiled also the progress made in a short enough period of time. I am sure that, at the next meeting, due in Brussels in next autumn, the results will be better,” Ghimpu said.

Also today, after the meeting of the EU – Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, the final declaration of the second meeting was adopted. The document contains a string of recommendations to the authorities of Moldova and European Commission.
