Moldova marks World Blood Donor Day

Chisinau, 14 June /MOLDPRES/- More actions today were held in different settlements of Moldova on the occasion of the World Blood Donor Day. The Health Ministry jointly with the National Blood Transfusion Centre organized the event.
Blood collection points were organized in all districts of the capital, in Balti and Cahul, where ceremonies on awarding the most active donors and artistic programs took place.
Other settlements marked the Blood Donor Day on 1-14 June within a national campaign for promoting and recruiting blood donors.
In the context, the National Blood Transfusion Centre launched an appeal to all Moldovan residents to prove solidarity with those in need of blood and to contribute to saving lives.
According to the Health Ministry, needs of blood transfusion therapy are fully covered in Moldova, with about 80,000 donations collected annually, which provide almost 130,000 sick people. About 56,000 out of 80,000 donations are provided by volunteer donors.
The Health Ministry is set to further increase the number of systematic volunteer donations. According to statistics of last years, in 2005, only 14 per cent were volunteer donations, and the rest was collected from relatives, and in 2015, volunteer donations accounted for 70 per cent.
