Chisinau, July 14 /MOLDPRES/ – The Law on Moldova’s accession to the Convention on the elaboration of the European Pharmacopoeia will be published in the 15 July issue of the Moldovan Official Journal.

The purpose of the document is to adjust the national legislation in the field of production, distribution and circulation of medicines to the standards promoted by the Council of Europe, which will ensure their guaranteed quality.

“The European Pharmacopoeia refers to qualitative and quantitative composition of medicines and basic materials used in the production and feedstock, as well as to the control tests which must be carried out to ensure their quality. Thus, all manufacturers of drugs and/or pharmaceutical substances must apply these quality standards for marketing their products in the Convention-member states”, reads the law.

“Accession to the Convention will allow domestic producers to distribute their products in countries belonging to the European Pharmacopoeia. Also, the quality of domestic medicines will be recognized and accepted on the European pharmaceutical market”, says the law.

The institutions in charge of implementing the Convention are the Ministry of Health and the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (AMED). Moldova will pay an annual contribution of 5,669 Euros from the AMED budget, following accession of the Convention.

The document will enter into force three months after the date on which instrument of ratification or acceptance was submitted, remaining in force for an indefinite period.

The Convention on the elaboration of the European Pharmacopoeia was adopted in Strasbourg in 1964 and entered into force in 1974. Presently, 37 member states of the Council of Europe have ratified the convention.
