Obituary. Petru Soltan

Chisinau, July 18 /MOLDPRES/ – We have learned, with regret and pain in soul, about the passing away of Academician Petru Soltan (29/06/1931 – 15/07/2016),  PhD in physical and mathematical sciences, professor, member of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences and member of Moldova's first Parliament (1990-1994). 

Petru Soltan was the founder of a scientific school "theory of d-convex sets and applications of mathematics"; he carried out valuable researches in the fields of geometry, topology, mathematical cybernetics, applied mathematics. For performances  gained, the academician was awarded the title of " Om Emerit" (Emeritus), Laureate of State Award in Science and the highest state distinction – "Ordinul Republicii" (Order of the Republic). 

Soltan's contribution to the development of physical and methematical sciences was highly appreciated both at home and abroad, being appointed honorary member, Honorary Professor and Doctor Honoris Causa of more prestigious universities. 

Academician Petru Soltan remains a model of a man who dedicated himself to science, culture and patriotic education of the younger generation. At the same time, he was one of the initiators of the national revival movement, an eminent personality of the  public life, an example for the current generation and the next ones. 

We express our sincere condolences to the family, relatives, friends and all who have been close.
