Chisinau, 1 December /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet of ministers today approved a draft law on ratification of an agreement between Moldova and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on the NATO Liaison Office from Moldova. The document is to be submitted to Moldova’s president for consideration.
The accord was signed in Brussels at a meeting between Prime Minister Pavel Filip and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the North Atlantic Alliance’s Headquarters on 29 November 2016. “I am confident that the opening of this Liaison Office will contribute to turning to good account the potential of cooperation with the Alliance, by implementing the present initiatives, communication on NATO programmes, as well as new projects carried out with NATO’s support,” Pavel Filip said.
Moldova is interested in continuing the political dialogue and cooperation with the NATO in more sectors. This regards the reformation of Moldova’s security and defence sector, fighting new threats to security, including the cyber security, reformation and modernization of the armed forces, strategic communication, working out strategic documents and adjusting the legal framework to the European standards, Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Galbur said at the cabinet meeting.
The official added that the opening of the NATO Liaison Office did not run counter Moldova’s neutrality status. Galbur said that NATO liaison offices had been founded and existed in Ukraine, Central Asia states and Russia.
The governor of the Gagauzian autonomy, Irina Vlah, voted against the draft’s approval.
