Chisinau, 8 December /MOLDPRES/- The Agriculture and Food Ministry and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) today signed a framework programme on FAO's support in Moldova for 2016-2019.

Agriculture and Food Minister Eduard Grama said that signing of the agreement was a priority for developing the agri-food sector in Moldova.

“Partnerships signed with FAO represent a new stage of development and evolution of agriculture, by implementing advanced methods of land irrigation, purchase of agricultural equipment and stimulation of farmers. This country programme has three priorities: increasing competitiveness in the agri-food sector, developing sustainable agriculture, as well as sustainable management of natural resources and disasters,” Grama said.

For his part, FAO Representative to Moldova Raimund Jehle noted that the document opened new opportunities to supporting and collaborating with the international organizations in the agriculture sector.

“FAO is willing to back development of the agri-food sector, and this can be achieved through special programmes offered by the international community, as well as via the financial assistance. I found that the authorities show an increased interest to meet the goals set in more agreements signed in this respect, and this is a good thing,” Jehle said.

The programme sees providing material and financial support for developing country policies, preventing and combating natural factors unfavorable to the agricultural development.
