Moldovan judo federation head detained for blackmail, extortion of four million lei

Chisinau, 9 December /MOLDPRES/ -Law-enforcers have detained the head of Moldovan Judo Federation, a performance sportsman and a former policeman on charges of blackmail and extortion of 13 million Russian roubles (over four million lei) from en entrepreneur.
According to the press service of the General Police Inspectorate (IGP), the defendants were members of an organization led by criminal authority Grigore Caramalac, alias Bulgaru.
“The victim is a citizen of Moldova who worked as entrepreneur in Moscow, Russia. In last summer, the victim started being blackmailing by the members of the criminal group, in order to return an inexistent debt worth 200,000 U.S. dollars. The entrepreneur has been repeatedly threatened with the fact that he will no longer be able to carry out an economic activity, bodily harm, making allusions to his family members too. Also, during the stay of the aggrieved party in Chisinau, the members of the criminal organization resorted to bodily harm against his son,” a press release by IGP reads.
Law-enforcers started investigating the case, after the victim had appealed to the police. Within investigations, the law-enforcement bodies found out that the suspects had been supervising all the activity of the entrepreneur; they were following, analyzing and checking all economic transactions carried out by the entrepreneur both in Moldova and abroad.
The people detained are aged between 32 and 51 years and run the risk of being sentenced to 13-15 years of imprisonment.
