Chisinau, 15 December /MOLDPRES/ - The former prime minister, Vlad Filat, has been deprived of the MP mandate, under a decision passed by the parliament today.
“It is taken note of the petition by the acting prosecutor general, registered with No 2650 from 22 November 2016, according to which the parliament is informed about the results of the consideration of the cause, through which parliament member Vladimir Filat was stripped of immunity,” the approved decision reads.
According to an informative note to the document, on 22 November 2016, the acting prosecutor general notified the parliament about the decision in the Filat file. The petition of the acting prosecutor general is accompanied by a copy of the sentence of the Buiucani court from 27 June 2016 and the copy of the decision by the Chisinau-based Court of Appeal from 11 November, this year, according to which Vladimir Filat was recognized guilty of passive corruption and influence peddling and sentenced to nine years of imprisonment, fine worth 60,000 lei and was deprived of the right to hold public offices during five years.
At the meeting, a lawmaker of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), Tudor Deliu, said that this decision was groundless, as the ruling by the Court of Appeal is to be appealed at the Supreme Court of Justice. “This decision is taken in haste. In this way, we violate the rights to defence of Mr. Filat. We are well-aware of the fact that this file is a political one and what you do in parliament today prove this,” Deliu said.
At the same time, the parliament declared one MP mandate on behalf of PLDM vacant. Thus, according to the lists of candidates to the MP seat on behalf of the Liberal Democrats, the mandate declared vacant will be held by the former youth and sport minister, Loretta Handrabura.
Vlad Filat was detained on 15 October 2015, based on a self-denunciation by businessman Ilan Shor. The latter said he had bribed the former PM with 250 million dollars, with the charges turned down by Filat.
