Chisinau, 27 December /MOLDPRES/- Prosecutor’s offices of Botanica, Buiucani, Centru, Ciocana, Riscani districts and Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office will merge into one institution – Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office, starting from 1 January 2017. Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen made the statement today.

“Under the new law on prosecution, which entered into force on 1 August 2016, these institutions will be reformed in order to provide better functionality. Movable and immovable property, prosecutor archives, records, files and other documents will be sent to the Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecutors of these institutions will continue their work at the municipal prosecutor’s office. Heads of merged prosecutor’s offices will continue their work as deputy chief prosecutor of the Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office till the expiry of their mandates,” Harunjen said.

Chisinau Prosecutor Igor Popa said “due to these changes, the number of senior prosecutors will be cut, a unique practice for initiating and considering criminal cases will be set up, as well as it will be easier to create groups of prosecutors dealing with certain special cases.”

The new prosecutor’s office will be the largest in the country and will have about 180 prosecutors and 60 consultants.

The prosecutor’s office of Gagauzia has already gone through a similar process. Prosecutor’s offices of Ceadir-Lunga, Comrat and Vulcanesti merged into one prosecutor on 1 August 2016 – Gagauzia Prosecutor’s Office. Also, on 1 August, the prosecutor’s offices of level of the Courts of Appeal (Chisinau, Cahul, Bender and Balti), military prosecutor’s offices (Chisinau, Balti and Cahul), as well as transport prosecutor’s office have ceased activity.
