Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ - The decision on the Transnistrian conflict settlement will be taken strictly within the five-plus-two format, Deputy Prime Minister for Integration Gheorghe Balan said today, in the context of the 17 January statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Transnistrian conflict’s settlement by return to the Kozak Plan, which sees Moldova’s federalization.
Gheorghe Balan noted that the federalization might pose more risks for Moldova. “The items provided for in the Kozak Plan can lead to the blocking of the country’s functioning system. What was discussed yesterday deals with the opinion of the persons (Vladimir Putin and Igor Dodon), who discussed this subject. The decision on the Transnistrian conflict settlement will be taken only within the five-plus-two format and will be consulted with the country’s citizens. Thus solution must be viable,” Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Gheorghe Balan said.
At the same time, Gheorghe Balan said that, at present, there was a lack of cooperation between the head of state and the government as regards the Transnistrian conflict settlement. “There is lack of coordination on this segment; therefore, we need collaboration in certain actions. Mr. President is at the beginning of his mandate; therefore, we hope to overcome these misunderstandings,” Balan added.
At a news conference held along with Moldovan President Igor Dodon, Vladimir Putin spoke out for Moldova’s federalization in order to settle the Transnistrian conflict. Putin voiced hope that the Kozak Plan would be enforced, and as he put it, the problems of the residents from the Transnistrian region would be solved in this way.
President Igor Dodon pays his first official visit to Russia on 16-18 January, where he met including his counterpart Vladimir Putin. The last official visit to Moscow by a Moldovan president was made by Vladimir Voronin in 2008.
