Moldovan consumer's right to be informed on food products to be protected under law

Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet of ministers today approved a draft law on informing consumers about the food products, which provides for a higher level of consumer’s protection.
The draft will provide to end consumers the needed legal framework, in order to safely select food products, taking into account, in particular, the sanitary, economic, ecologic, social aspects, etc. Thus, the legislative act is set to defend the legitimate interests of the consumers and to promote the fabrication and placement of quality food products on market.
The draft’s authors said the latter “will serve both the interests of the domestic market and the external one, by simplifying the legislation, imposing the compulsory labeling of food products, clearly, legibly, to be understood by consumers.” Under the draft law, the producers or traders are obliged to maintain the names of products, ingredients used, their quantity, validity date for consumption, conditions for preservation, commercial name and address of the operator from the food business, as well as other information.
The draft is line with the legislation in the field of food products’ safety and consumers’ protection and is adjusted to European standards.
The draft law is to be submitted to parliament for consideration and adoption.
