Moldovan government approves ratification of Paris Agreement on mitigation of greenhouse effect gases' emissions

Chisinau, 25 January /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet of ministers, at a today’s meeting, approved a draft law on the ratification of the Paris Agreement, the goal of which is to mitigate the emissions of greenhouse effect gases. Prime Minister Pavel Filip signed the document in New York on 21 September 2016, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.  

The agreement provides for strengthening a global reaction to the threats triggered by the climate changes. The states signatory to the Paris Agreement will ensure the implementation of measures needed not to allow the increase in the average global temperature, as well as to develop abilities of adaptation and resistance to the climate changes. Also, the document encourages the states to stabilize the level of emissions of greenhouse effect gases, including by measures of forests’ conservation.

To this end, Moldova committed to reduce, till 2030, the overall emissions of greenhouse effect gases by at least 67 per cent against the level recorded in 1990. At the same time, the ratification of the Agreement will allow Moldova access international funds meant to back measures of mitigating the global warming and diminishing its effects.  

The Paris Agreement was adopted at the Conference of 196 states parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change on 12 December 2015.  The agreement promotes the enforcement of the principle of responsibility within the limit of national circumstances.
