Chisinau, 30 January /MOLDPRES/ - Issues on the situation in the hydrological system of Moldova, and in particular, on the ecosystem of the Dniester river, were discussed at a today’s meeting at the government, chaired by Prime Minister Pavel Filip, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The PM showed concern about information on the Ukrainian authorities’ intention to build six new hydro-electric power stations, placed upstream the Novodnestrovsk hydro-electric power plant. According to ecologists, the construction of these power plants poses a real danger to the environment.
In the context, the prime minister said that the government had been notified by more non-governmental organizations and the scientific community about the negative impact of the Novodnestrovsk Hydro-Power Compound, which represents a danger for the biodiversity and water resources of the Dniester river. As a result of the compound’s work, the capacities of the water’s self-purification have been diminished because of the deterioration of the thermal regime, the volume of the Dubasari water storage reservoir decreased and the potential of recreation of the adjacent areas has lowered.
To consider the emerged situation, identify all present risks and needed solutions to overcome these problems, the prime minister instructed the setting up of an inter-ministerial working group, which is to elaborate a concrete action plan to this end.
In parallel, decision-makers will make an inventory of all the bilateral and international acts on the concerned subject, to which Moldova and Ukraine are parties, including on the Moldova-EU, Ukraine-EU association agreements, commitments taken under the ecologic and investment aspects.
