Moldovan cabinet approves draft to ensure new conditions for use of DNA samples in investigating crimes

Chisinau, 8 February /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet, at a today’s meeting, approved a draft law on the judicial genetic registration. The document ensures needed conditions for the collection and preservation of genetic (DNA) samples necessary for the prevention and fighting offences and identification of people missed, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The draft sets the basic requirements for carrying out the genetic registration, the persons from whom DNA samples can be drawn, conditions in which these samples are collected, as well as regulates the management of the material accumulated. Thus, the samples will be taken over by qualified staff of the General Police Inspectorate or the Forensic Medicine Centre.
At the same time, a laboratory of molecular genetic analysis is to be created and a computerized database necessary to quickly identify the authors of the offence based on DNA, as well as to carry out exchange of information on genetic date with other states. Financial means worth about 3.5 million euros will be needed to create the laboratory at the Interior Ministry, purchase the necessary equipment and train the staff.
The approved document is to be submitted to parliament for consideration.
