Earthquake occurred in Romania felt in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 8 February /MOLDPRES/ - An earthquake with a magnitude of five degrees on the Richter open scale took place in Romania, the Vrancea seismic zone, today. The earthquake was felt with the magnitude of three degrees on Richter in Chisinau.   

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the director of the Geology and Seismology Institute at the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (ASM), Igor Nicoara, said the earthquake had occurred at a depth of 156 km at 17:08.   

“The earthquake which occurred at about 17:00 had an intensity of three degrees on the Richter open scale in Chisinau and of 4 degrees on Richter in Leova and Cahul. Also today, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 degrees on the Richter open scale took place in the Vrancea mountains region at 11:52 and it was felt weakly only in the southern region of Moldova. The earthquake was felt in some regions of Bulgaria too,” Nicoara said.  

The last earthquake with a magnitude of four degrees on Richter open scale took place on 28 December 2016.
