Moldovan PM on visit to Ukraine

Chisinau, 13 February /MOLDPRES/- Moldova will take consistent efforts to withdraw Russian troops from the country and will insist on transforming the current peacekeeping operation on the Dniestre river in a civil mission with international mandate. Prime Minister Pavel Filip has made the statement on the matter.

The premier noted that the presence of foreign troops in the country breach the Constitution of Moldova. “Just as important is the agreement on withdrawal of Russian troops from Moldova, which was signed in 1999 at the OSCE Summit in Istanbul, but it has not been met”, Filip said.

At the same time, the premier said that the mandate of current peacekeeping mission on the Dniestre had been already carried out. “Therefore, I insist on turning it into a civil mission with international mandate, which will boost progress in negotiations on the Transnistrian conflict settlement”, Filip said.

The premier gave the interview in the context of his official visit to Kiev, Ukraine. He will meet Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to discuss the Moldovan-Ukrainian relations development and possibilities to boost bilateral partnership. At the same time, they will approach more current topics of both states, including: protecting Dniestre river ecosystem, boosting economic relations, as well as jointly approaching the Transnistrian conflict settlement.
