Chisinau, 2 March /MOLDPRES/- On 2 March 1992, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/46/223) through which the Republic of Moldova was admitted to membership in the United Nations. This historic decision implied not only full rights for the newly admitted UN member, but also signified the international recognition for the independence of the Republic of Moldova, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry's information and media relations service has reported.
Since then, the cooperation with the United Nations system has been an important priority of the Moldovan foreign policy, based on full acknowledgement of the indispensable role played by the World Organization in preserving the international peace and security, promotion of sustainable development and human rights.
For a quarter of a century, the Republic of Moldova has served as a staunch defender of the values and principles of the United Nations Charter. It has actively contributed to the work of UN’s main bodies and its specialized institutions. As an elected member of many important UN bodies, including Economic and Social Council, UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS/UNICEF Executive Boards, Human Rights Council, etc., the Republic of Moldova has fully participated in the multilateral efforts aimed at promoting the human rights and addressing the global challenges in the economic, social and humanitarian fields.
The cooperative interaction with the Chisinau-based country offices of the UN agencies, funds and programmes which provide development assistance under various thematic projects, is another important dimension of the broader cooperation of the Republic of Moldova with the UN specialized institutions and the UN related organizations.
The successful and productive cooperation of the Republic of Moldova within and with the UN system would have not been possible without the specific contribution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and of the country’s permanent missions accredited to the UN structures in New York, Geneva and Vienna. The Moldovan diplomacy will continue to be actively involved in the work of the UN and its specialized agencies in order to advance the national specific interests and priorities in the field of multilateral diplomacy, as well as to uphold the principles embodied in the United Nations Charter.
On the occasion of 25th anniversary of the Republic of Moldova’s joining to the United Nations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration expresses its congratulations and gratitude to all employees of the national institutions involved in the UN related activities and cooperation as well as to representatives and employees of the UN country offices in Chisinau for their dedicated and productive work.
