Former governor of National Bank of Moldova hospitalised in reanimation department

Chisinau, 6 March /MOLDPRES/- Former governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) Leonid Talmaci, detained by anticorruption prosecutors on a swindling case, was hospitalized at reanimation department on Saturday evening.   

His lawyer Vitalie Nagacevschi said that Talmaci has heart problems and has undergone surgery in January.

The lawyer noted that interrogatory at the National Anti-Corruption Centre lasted on Saturday with interruptions from 10:00 to 19:00. The defender showed confidence that during questioning, both prosecutors and criminal investigators have obtained sufficient evidence that Talmaci “does not have the slightest involvement in operations that have harmed the National Bureau of Motor Insurance”. Nagacevschi voiced confidence he would get withdrawing the measure of house arrest of his client.

Leonid Talmaci was detained by anticorruption prosecutors and placed under house arrest for 15 days, according to the 3 March decision by the Buiucani district court. He is accused of belonging to an organized criminal group, dealing with swindles in large proportions, property damage by fraud or breach of trust and abuse of office.

According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, it is about a criminal ring that had caused damage of over 15 million lei to the National Bureau of Motor Insurance (BNAA). The money would have been distracted from the BNAA’s accounts in Moldova Agroindbank and Moldindconbank.

Talmaci is accused of offenses and “he runs the risk of imprisonment of up to 15 years”, the arrest warrant reads.
