Former governor of National Bank of Moldova released temporarily under judicial control

Chisinau, 7 March /MOLDPRES/- Former governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) Leonid Talmaci, detained by anticorruption prosecutors on a swindling case, was temporarily released today under judicial control. His lawyer Vitalie Nagacevschi confirmed the information on the matter.

A decision in this respect was taken by magistrates of the Buiucani district court, according to which Talmaci was set under judicial control for 15 days. “Judges accepted the lawyers’ request because of his health condition. Talmaci was released for 15 days till 18 March, and later it will decide on his situation”, Nagacevschi said.

Leonid Talmaci was detained by anticorruption prosecutors and placed under house arrest for 15 days, according to the 3 March decision by the Buiucani district court. He is accused of belonging to an organized criminal group, dealing with swindles in large proportions, property damage by fraud or breach of trust and abuse of office.

According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, it is about a criminal ring that had caused damage of over 15 million lei to the National Bureau of Motor Insurance (BNAA). The money would have been distracted from the BNAA’s accounts in Moldova Agroindbank and Moldindconbank.

If Talmaci is guilty, he runs the risk of imprisonment of up to 15 years.
