Moldovan deputy economics minister detained for abuse of power

Chisinau, 1 April /MOLDPRES/- A deputy economics minister was detained for 72 hours by anticorruption prosecutors and officers of the National Anticorruption Centre (CNA) on 31 March. He is suspected of abuse of power and harming state budget in extremely large amounts.
According to the CNA press service, the official through third parties would have bought from Moldtelecom company a building amounting to about 1 million lei, and later he gave it on lease for a 10-year period to the Nord Electricity company. Later, by abuse of power the suspect would have given indications to decision makers of the company to repair the building on lease of its account. Under the documents managed by investigators, 4 million lei was earmarked to repair the building.
On 31 March, the prosecutors and CNA officers searched the office and domicile of the official. Also, the suspect’s cars were searched. Following the criminal investigation, investigators have raised more evidence which will be attached to the file.
The police started a criminal case. If found guilty, the suspect runs the risk of fine from 67,500 to 117,500 lei or imprisonment from 2 to 6 years, in both cases with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or to practice certain activities for a period of 5-10 years.
