Swiss government backs creation of modern market in southern Moldova

Chisinau, 26 April /MOLDPRES/- The South Regional Developmnet Agency announced that by late 2017 in Selemet village, Cimislia district, a modern market will be opened, which is set up by the local mayoralty on EU money.

“In Selemet there are many farmers who produce cheese, honey, mushrooms and vegetables, as being their only source of existence. We are regularly visited by residents of Chisinau who prefer to travel about 60 km to us to buy diary and fresh vegetables. The construction of this market will have a beneficial impact on the activity of agricultural producers and at the same time will bring additional revenues to the local budget”, Mayor of Selemet village Tatiana Badan said.

Presently, residents are selling their goods in the street on a road of almost a kilometer long. In the region it is expected to open a market with an area of about 500 square meters this autumn. To complete the arrangement and equipment of this commercial space, 24.2 thousand dollars are needed, of which 20,000 represent the grant provided by the Swiss government. This is the second financial contribution of Swiss authorities to the modernization of the Selemet market. By late last year, Switzerland offered a grant of 20,000 dollars.

Selemet is one of the six localities in the country that received grants worth 20,000 dollars from the Swiss government to boost local business environment within the Migration and Local Development Project.

“Under the project, an ecological hall will be built where dairy and meat producers will sell their goods under appropriate sanitary conditions. The second project is related to the arrangement, equipment and fencing market area. Together they form a single commercial object that has all insured utilities and will generate additional income for farmers", economic expert of the project Veaceslav Bulat said. 

The project is an initiative of the UNDP supported by several international organisations. It is implemented in 2015-2017 in partnership with Moldovan government, local autorities, non-governmental organisations, private sector, population, including migrants from the target communities. The project involves 25 villages and cities in the country.
