Moldova participates in spring meetings of IMF, World Bank in Washington

Chisinau, 26 April /MOLDPRES/ - The implementation of the programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as the progress of reforms in the banking system have been the main subjects discussed by Moldova’s delegation at the spring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group. The event took place in Washington on 17-23 April, according to the press service of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM).
The Moldovan delegation, led by Finance Minister Octavian Armasu and BNM Governor Sergiu Cioclea, had meetings with more IMF officials: Deputy Managing Director Mitsuhiro Furusawa, Director of the European Department Poul Thomsen, Head of IMF Mission for Moldova Ben Kelmanson, Executive Director for Moldova Anthony De Lannoy and others. The authorities’ initiatives in the structural reforms’ field were discussed with representatives of the World Bank Group, including with WB Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Cyril Muller and Director for Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova Satu Kahkonen.
The meetings with European officials Pierre Moscovici (European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs), Elena Flores (Director for International Economic Relations) and Katarina Mathernova (Deputy Director-General for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations) were focused on a draft agreement between Moldova and the European Union on macro-financial assistance.
A string of meetings on investments in the financial and banking sector were organized with decision-makers of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and International Finance Corporation (IFC, World Bank Group).
The Moldovan officials participated in a strategic session titled, Achievements and Priorities in Process of Reforms in Financial and Banking Sector and Economy, organized by the Washington-based Atlantic Council. The event brought together representatives of the U.S. Administration, academic environment and other experts of analytical centres from the American federal capital.
Also in Washington, the Moldovan delegation met representatives of the Diaspora, with whom they discussed the economic situation in Moldova, public administration reforms, as well as actions to fight corruption.
The delegation was also made up of Deputy Finance Minister Veronica Vragaleva, BNM First Deputy Governor Vladimir Munteanu and BNM Deputy Governor Cristina Harea.
The spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank represent a unique possibility to share the experience of diverse countries in the fields of economic development and financial stability, in the context of globalization.
