Obituary in memory of Moldovan academician Alexandru Ciubotaru

Chisinau, 28 April /MOLDPRES/ - Academician Alexandru Ciubotaru, founder of the Botanical Garden (Institute) of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM), a famous scientist in Moldova and abroad has passed away. Moldova lost an illustrious scientist in the sector of embryology, karyology, cyto-genetics and vegetal biotechnology, specialist with special merits in the designing and arranging of green areas, parks and botanical gardens.
Academician Alexandru Ciubotaru dedicated his entire life to the scientific research, bringing a significant contribution to the development of the biology science through the promotion of theories and concepts on the development of the vegetable world, recognized nationally and all over the world.
The results of the researches by academician Ciubotaru comprise over 750 scientific publications, including 26 monographs. The performance in the field to which the academician dedicated his entire career of researcher became outstanding also through his scientific school, as the scientist was scientific leader and adviser for more than 60 doctoral and habilitational theses, through the setting up of laboratories of scientific researches, organization of expeditions in order to diversify the genofund of plants from multiple floristic regions. It is worth being highlighted the rich scientific and organizational activity of academician Ciubotaru, which he carried out as director of the Botanical Garden from Chisinau, thus essentially contributing to the getting by the Botanical Garden of the status of scientific research institution.
The scientist was awarded the highest state distinction – Order of the Republic, as well as the Stefan cel Mare si Sfant (Stephen the Great and Holy) Order, offered by the Orthodox Church of Moldova, for multi-aspectual prodigious activity, for is deep researches of great commitment. He was provided the title Merited Man of Moldova, Knight of the Gloria Muncii (Labour Glory) Order, First Degree Diploma of Moldova’s Government, Dimitrie Cantemir Medal, Carl Linne silver medal of the Swedish Academy; Doctor Honoris Causa of the A.I. Cuza University from Iasi, Romania, and many other distinctions, diplomas and mentions.
In these moments of grievous loss not only for the academic community, but also for the entire society, we express our deep regret for the passing away of academician Alexandru Ciubotaru, famous scientist and exceptional professor, who dedicated all his life to the science, knowledge, country’s development, remaining for everybody who knew him a man with high moral and intellectual qualities.
