Chisinau, 9 May /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu today laid wreaths of flowers and stood silent for one minute at the Eternitate (Eternity) memorial venue from Chisinau, in the memory of the heroes who died in the World War II and those who fell for the Motherland’s Independence, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
As a token of homage and gratitude, the speaker laid wreaths of flowers at the monument to the Unknown Hero and the Grieving Mother.
The parliament speaker told journalists that 9 May had a double significance; it is the day when we commemorate the veterans who fought for Moldova’s future, for freedom and independence. According to Candu, 72 years ago, the darkest and the most tragic page of the 20th century’s history was over, and then five years after that, in 1950, the Europe Day was declared – a project of peace, which would not have existed without the Victory Day. Thus, through the two holidays – Victory Day and Europe Day, 9 May is meant to strengthen peace in the world, the parliament speaker said.
Salutes were fired in the memory of the heroes who died in battles. Attending the ceremony dedicated to the Victory Day and the one of commemorating the heroes who fell for the Motherland’s Independence were MPs, ministers, representatives of the diplomatic corps, employees of the law–enforcement bodies, veterans, guests and residents of Chisinau.
The 9 May day is known as the Day of Victory of the United Nations Coalition during the World War II and represented the signing of the act of unconditional surrender of the Nazi Germany. This led to the end of the Second World War in Europe. In last April, the parliament voted a draft a draft law which officialized the Europe Day. The Europe Day is a yearly holiday of peace and unity in Europe. This event is considered as a fundamental moment in the history of Europe.
