Moldovan PM demands authorities prompt actions to eliminate heavy rains consequences

Chisinau, 14 May /MOLDPRES/ – Prime Minister Pavel Filip convened an emergency meeting in the Government today, the Emergency Situations Commission (CSE), to coordinate the required measures to eliminate consequences of heavy rains on 13-14 May, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.  

According to the Civil Protection and Emergency Situations Service’s report, heavy rains affected most several localities in Moldova, which are Anenii Noi, Ialoveni, Cimislia districts and Chisinau municipality. The intervention teams managed to unlock the access routes to all affected localities, injured or deceased persons were not registered.

Similarly, due to bad weather conditions, eight localities in Nisporeni, Straseni, Anenii Noi, Causeni, Taraclia and ATU Gagauzia districts were partially disconnected from electricity today. According to the latest information, most of the malfunctions have been removed. In this context, the Prime Minister urged the Economy Ministry to ask the electricity suppliers about their capacities to intervene in crisis situations. "I want to understand very clearly how many teams of intervention are, because crisis situations occur. I want to intervene promptly if their own forces are not enough, then they have to make sure they have contracts with specialized services and they can intervene in case of natural calamities," said Pavel Filip.

The rains also affected railroad traffic. On 13 May, Chisinau-Moscow train was blocked near Bulboaca village, Anenii Noi district. Here, the authorities intervened to evacuate the passengers and took them to Chisinau by bus, and early on 14 May the train passengers to Moscow were brought by bus to Bulboaca, where the respective race was carried out. Also, the Transports Ministry’s representatives mentioned that after the necessary verifications, at 13.00, the railroad traffic would resume by the schedule.

For their part, the Environment Ministry’s representatives noted that the southern and central regions of Moldova were the most affected. However, the situation is under control, the dams have not yielded, and the large rivers, reservoir lakes and basins have not come out of the bed.

At the hearing, officials also discussed the consequences of heavy rain for agricultural crops. Pavel Filip asked the Agricultural Ministry to evaluate all damages caused by this year April weather and recent rains to identify needs for intervention with help.

At the CSE’s meeting end, the Premier asked the authorities to continue the intervention measures where necessary. Also, the head of the Executive stressed the importance of constantly informing the population about weather forecasts for the period to come. "People need to know what their situation is in the territory and where they need to be addressed, if needed. It is not a common situation, but some localities were affected, people suffered and we have to intervene to eliminate the consequences", concluded Pavel Filip.
