Chişinău, 14 May /MOLDPRES/ – The civil society and opposition parties’ representatives protested in front of the Parliament today, where they requested the definitive withdrawal of the initiatives to modify the electoral system and maintain the current voting mode.
The people gathered in front of the Parliament armed with placards, which read "The billion, not the uninominal", "Withdrawal" and chanted slogans such as "We do not give up" and "Victory Moldova".
More civil activists addressed the protesters and evoked arguments against the voting system change. They also insisted on urgent withdrawal of the submitted initiatives in Parliament.
On 05 May 2017, the Legislature approved in first reading two draft amendments to the electoral system: the Democratic Party’s (PD) proposal on introduction of the uninominal vote and the Socialist Party’s (PSRM) one on mixed-type voting. After consultations, the Legal Commission, on appointments and immunities, decided to merge the projects for the second reading.
