Moldovan PM attends meeting on peace education in New York

Chisinau, 21 September /MOLDPRES/- Prime Minister Pavel Filip participated with President of Romania Klaus Iohannis in a high-level meeting “Promoting peace education”, organized by Romania on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
In his speech, the premier noted that the issue is topical and must be a universal concern, especially, as more and more young people are involved in terrorist and extremist activities.
The premier noted that security measures are not enough to counteract this 21st century scourge, and peace education should be in schools by setting up programs focused on preventing and reducing violence.
“In areas affected by conflict or post-conflict, the educational process and peace-building efforts must be supported by youth policies that provide for vocational training possibilities and engaging in economic and social development projects meant to back the local economy”, he said.
At the same time, Filip pointed out that the key to success in promoting peace education lies in the simultaneous and concerted implementation of a set of multidimensional, short, medium and long-term activities.
“Internally, Moldova strives for policies and activities related to youth include elements on promoting tolerance, culture of peace and non-violence, appreciation of diversity and human rights, as well as ensuring economic, social and political inclusion”, Filip said.
At the end, Filip voiced confidence that the implementation of the Development Agenda 2030, especially, of the goal on sustainable development focused on ensuring inclusive and quality education and respectively, the goal aimed at promoting inclusive and peaceful societies, will eliminate many of the vulnerabilities that are currently facilitating the perpetuation and manifestation of terrorism and violent extremism.
