UN Food and Agriculture Organization supports rural development of Moldova throughout two technical assistance projects

Chisinau, 14 November /MOLDPRES/ – The Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment today signed with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) two technical assistance projects contributing to rural development in Moldova. The first project aims to produce the berries by small farmers, while the second concerns the consolidation of the rural development policies.
The FAO will provide $455 thousand for the project to strengthen the capacities of small farmers for the production of berries. The project started on 01 November 2017 and will be completed in October 2019, supporting creation of lots on which innovative technologies and farmer training will be applied.
The second project, with a budget of $363 thousand and two years, will be launched on 15 December 2017. The FAO will provide technical assistance for rural development at the local level.
It will assist us to promote innovations in agriculture and rural development on basis of European standards, said Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, Vasile Bitca. "We appreciate the involvement of the FAO in strengthening the agricultural sector’s capacity. We are grateful for support and we have the certainty of effective collaboration," said the minister.
FAO Representative, Raimund Jehle, reiterated FAO’s willingness to provide expertise and technical assistance to develop further a sustainable agricultural sector in Moldova.
In 2014 – 2017, Moldova has benefited from FAO expertise and technical assistance, worth about $2 million to strengthen the agricultural sector, including improving food law and safety.
So as to prioritise the help, Government of Moldova jointly with the FAO developed and approved the Country Framework Programme for 2016 – 2019 focusing on three priority areas of assistance for Moldova: increasing the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development as well as capacity building in the sustainable management of natural resources and natural disaster management.
