EU to provide Moldova with one million euros to promote, protect cultural heritage

Chisinau, 17 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Education, Culture and Research Ministry today presented a twinning project, Support to promote cultural heritage in the Republic of Moldova through its preservation and protection. The project has a budget of one million euros and is financed by the European Union.
In her speech, Education, Culture and Research Minister Monica Babuc has said that, in the last years, seven draft laws on the cultural heritage sector were worked out and adopted. “The project launched today stipulates providing of support to citizens, strengthening capacities of knowledge and promotion of cultural heritage and can serve as an important source of sustainable development,” the minister stressed.
Monica Babuc specified that the general goal of the project, implemented in partnership with the Italian Ministry of Culture, is to offer Moldova’s specialized institutions support to consolidate the enforcement of the legal framework and improve the governance in the field of cultural heritage protection.
Attending the event, European Union Ambassador to Moldova Peter Michalko said that the promotion and protection of the cultural heritage was one of the basic elements in the country’s sustainable development. The official emphasized that this was provided for also in the Association Agreement with EU.
Ambassador of Italy to Moldova Valeria Biagiotti said that her country would provide assistance to implement the concerned project, noting that the Italian government allocates 17 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product for the protection of the cultural heritage.
The implementation of the twinning project by the Education, Culture and Research Ministry started in last September and will end in September 2019.
